We propose that the problem is not the acceleration of change itself, it is our inadequacy to deal with transformation without having a crisis. The intellectual tradition that we have inherited conceives of the future as something that can be predicted, if only we can gain sufficient knowledge. While this has been a critical source of stability in the past, it is now appearing as a source of rigidity. When the world shifts suddenly, predictions can become obsolete overnight. Plans based on these predictions fail to adapt to changing circumstances. We need to find another source of stability that allows us to cope with change more flexibly.
